Germany and Czech Republic Day 7 [Prague, Czech Republic]

Writer's picture: Aaron BoltmanAaron Boltman

I woke up early this morning.... I was hoping for a sunrise... I should have known better.

I hiked up the hill to get to a viewpoint on the lower part of the Prague Castle to try and take a picture of Prague with a sunrise. Light eventually got better, but no colors and then it started to snow lightly.

I started by walking around Prague Castle and taking pictures of the exterior - something I didn't have much time for yesterday....

At 09:00 when they opened I visited the Rosenberg Palace - the only item I didn't visit yesterday. I should have visited it yesterday because there just wasn't much inside.

After taking out 500kr more from the ATM and taking some more outside pictures I bought a 24 hour metro ticket and took the metro to the National Museum... this turned out to be a disaster because they only allow a limited number of people inside the building and the queue was long. I took a few exterior pictures then decided to go to the Municipal House.

I missed the English tour of the Municipal House and there are no tours on Sunday. There were a couple at 16:00 and 17:00. I bought a ticket for the 17:00 tour since it would already be dark outside and I could still go in the astronomical clock tower before sunset.

I went up the Powder Tower which is attached to the Municipal Building while trying to use my time smartly. I almost didn't know there was additional stairs leading outside for the view. The view is well worth the 100kr.

I then took the metro to see the National Theater and took it back in order to take the 14:00 tour of the old town hall.

At first the people I talked to had no idea about the tour..... when I got to the 1st floor they printed me out a tour ticket (free with normal admission) and I was taking pictures of the chapel and didn't realize I could see the apostles for the atomic clock move at 14:00 through a glass window...

The tour was excellent and also discussed some of the history of the Czech Republic. I highly suggest taking the tour - their website has the schedule.

The tour ended at 15:20-ish. I walked up the ramp / stairs to the top rather than waiting for the lift so I could make it in time for sunset and back to the Municipal House in time for my tour.

After taking two laps around the outside I left the tower at 16:15 and was able to make it to the Municipal House in plenty of time.

The tour of the Municipal House was nice, but it wasn't Palais Garnier.... still worth a look, although the tour was quite expensive - 345kr including photo license.

After the tour of the Municipal House I walked over to the Christmas Market for a snack and some hot alcohol...

I wandered around a bit more before heading back for the evening.
